Let's talk about Indian media, or should I say the puppet of the Indian government. Nowadays Indian media is not media anymore, they act as puppets of government. They'll always praise the government, they never say anything anti-government. Is it a sign that India can be the next China?

According to a survey, 74 % of people believe Indian media is not independent, Over 46,000 people participated in that survey.

It arises the question-Is Indian government is controlling media? Let's find out.

World press freedom index

As per the 2020 world press freedom index, India has slipped to 142 ranks out of 180 countries listed, that's behind Afghanistan(122) and South Sudan(138). 

In 2018, India was at 138th place and in 2019 it was at 140th place. 

It shows us that Indian media's freedom is decreasing day by day.

2019 survey on Media

In 2019, an independent organization called as official peeinghuman did an analysis in which they monitored topics of main debate show on the top 4 channels of India - Zee News, Aaj Tak, News 18 India, India tv for 30 days. 

Following were the main topics of their debate in those 30 days-

Attacking Opposition (including Nehru): 19

Praising Modi & RSS: 13

Ram Mandir: 4

PMC bank scam: 1

As you can see in the above data all these top channels don't show important news, they are always praising the government, they never show any anti-government news.

Nowadays when you turn on a news channel in India, all you see is justice for Sushant, its true that media should raise voice on this topic, but it does not mean to show it 24×7, there are another important news. 

They are trying to divert the attention of people from other important topics which people should know about like -

The worst GDP growth rate

India's quarterly GDP growth rate in 2020 has been the lowest ever seen since 1996(Before that GDP in India was calculated annually only).

The annual GDP growth rate was the worst in 1979-80 and some experts say that when the 2020 annual GDP growth rate figure will come, it will be even worse.

But Indian media didn't show this, some channels didn't talk about it they were busy roaming around Rhea Chakraborty's house, some channels shown manipulative figures by comparing quarter figures with annual figures. 

Farmer Bill,2020

On Sept 17, 2020, bjp proposed a bill in Lok sabha called farmer bill in which they tried to implement a trading system for farmers and traders which was already failed in most developed countries like France, America, etc. and when they tried to pass it, opposition opposed their decision, but even after that bill was passed due to partiality in voting. After the bill passed, farmers and traders protested against it all over the country but mostly media didn't show even a little glimpse of protest, they were busy in Bollywood's connection to drugs. And some media were opposing protest.

Covid-19 at peak

More than 80,000 cases of corona are being reported per day in India, no other country is recording this many cases per day. India has now become the worst country in this case.

But did Indian media shown us that? No, they didn't. 

All these things show that Indian media became a puppet of the Indian government.

Now the question arises Why? Why they don't publish any anti-government news? Why they don't raise voice against the Indian government?

The answer is - Because they can't.

Government threat on Media

Nowadays the media of India can't work freely without the interference of government, they can't challenge the Indian government. The government of India does pressurize Indian media, it sets restrictions on their operations. Whenever a news channel tries to raise voice against the government, the government threatens to shut down their business.

News channels have to obey the government because if they don't, the government can order cable operators to not show that particular channel.

Generally, news channels get only 2-3% of revenue from the public by cable operators, the rest of revenue comes from advertisements, and if any cable operator disconnects the news channel from their cable, then the news channel loses advertisers.

In an interview with journalists Abhisar Sharma, he told that there was a special person named as Nripendra Mishra in pm office just to monitor all news channel to check if any news channel is saying any anti-government thing.

So, Where to get authentic news?

The Internet is the only hope, government can't fully restrict the internet. Yes, it can block some sites, but it's not fully functional, a person can access a blocked website by using a VPN, there are many paid and free VPN available on the internet. So if any authentic news agency wants to approach the public without any restrictions from the government, the internet is their solution.
